My first stop in exploring Milan's nightlife is the city's iconic aperitivo hour. It's a delightful Italian tradition where bars and restaurants offer a pre-dinner drink accompanied by a selection of small bites. The concept is simple - you order a drink, typically an Aperol Spritz or Negroni, and you're given access to an array of complimentary appetizers. The aperitivo hour usually starts from 7 PM and lasts until around 9 PM. It's a fantastic way to kick start your night out in Milan, mingling with locals and tourists alike.
There are plenty of bars in Milan offering aperitivo, but my personal favourites are Bar Basso, famous for its Negroni Sbagliato, and Ceresio 7, a rooftop bar with a stunning view of the city. Make sure to arrive early as these places can get quite crowded, especially on weekends.
Restaurant Scene: From Traditional Trattorias to Modern Dining
After enjoying the aperitivo hour, it's time for dinner. Milan is full of amazing restaurants offering a range of cuisines, from traditional Italian dishes to international fare. However, I recommend trying the local Milanese cuisine. A must-try is the "Ossobuco alla Milanese", a braised veal shank served with a side of risotto.
For a traditional dining experience, Trattoria della Pesa is a great choice. It's one of the oldest restaurants in Milan and serves classic Milanese dishes. If you're looking for something more modern, Contraste offers a unique dining experience with its surprising and creative menu. Regardless of where you choose to eat, remember to pair your meal with a bottle of Italian wine.
Exploring Milan's Hip Bars and Clubs
After dinner, it's time to dive into Milan's vibrant bar and club scene. The city is known for its stylish and lively nightlife, with venues ranging from sleek rooftop bars to underground clubs. The Navigli district is particularly popular for its canal-side bars and pubs, while Corso Como is the place to be for clubbing.
For a more upscale experience, head to the Brera district, where you'll find a number of chic cocktail bars. If you're a fan of craft beer, don't miss out on Birrificio Lambrate, one of Milan's first craft breweries. For late-night dancing, Club Plastic and Gattopardo Café are among the city's top clubs. Remember, Milanese usually start their night out late, so don't be surprised if the clubs are still quiet before midnight.
Live Music and Performances
For those who enjoy live music and performances, Milan has a lot to offer. The city is home to several live music venues, covering various genres from jazz to rock. Blue Note is a renowned jazz club that often hosts international artists. For rock and indie music fans, Alcatraz and Circolo Magnolia are great options.
Beyond music, Milan's nightlife also includes theatre and opera performances. The Teatro alla Scala is one of the world's most famous opera houses and seeing a performance there is a must-do when in Milan. Check the schedule in advance as tickets can sell out quickly.
Late Night Eats
After a night of drinking and dancing, you might find yourself hungry again. Luckily, Milan has a variety of late-night eateries where you can grab a snack before heading home. Pizzerias and kebab shops are usually open until the early morning hours and are perfect for a quick bite.
Luini Panzerotti is a popular spot known for its delicious deep-fried calzones, while Pizzeria Da Michele offers some of the best pizzas in town. If you're looking for something sweet, Gelateria della Musica serves amazing gelato even late at night.
Public Transportation and Safety
Getting around Milan at night is relatively easy thanks to the city's efficient public transportation system. The metro operates until midnight, while night buses run throughout the night. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also readily available.
Milan is generally a safe city, but like in any major city, it's important to stay vigilant, especially at night. Avoid isolated areas and keep an eye on your belongings. Finally, remember to drink responsibly and enjoy your night out in this beautiful city!
